The short-term consequences (for the club) are evident, but perhaps even more so is the fact that the players have seven games to prove themselves worthy of a berth in the squad next season. With Newcastle’s new owners anticipated to spend extensively on the transfer market this summer, everyone will be attempting to demonstrate that their situation does not require quick improvement. Eddie Howe, the manager, is in the same boat.
Brendan Rodgers and Leicester (40 points, 9th position) advanced to the semifinals of the Europa Conference League on Thursday. Leicester’s only hope of qualifying for European competition next season is to win the inaugural competition, which is nine points ahead of them (automatic Europa League group stage qualification). The Foxes have been in some of their best form all season (4W-1D-2L in their last seven Premier League games) since the knockout stages began, and it hasn’t come at the expense of their domestic form.
