Instagram announced on Thursday that it is experimenting with new ways to confirm users’ ages on the network, starting with users in the US. The photo-sharing website announced a partnership with Yoti, a business that specialises in online age verification by facial scan.

In addition to letting users upload their identity evidence online, the company is currently exploring two new techniques to confirm a user’s age. 2) AI estimation, and 1) social verification.

The individual vouching must be at least 18 years old. The first technique, social vouching, requires Instagram users to choose three mutual followers to verify the user’s age.

Users can send a video selfie to Yoti to verify their age in the second approach, known as AI estimation, after which Yoti’s machine learning algorithm makes an age calculation based on facial traits. Once the age has been confirmed, the image will be removed by both Meta and Yoti.

In terms of online age and ID verification, Yoti is a well-known player. It calculates a target’s age using a variety of facial cues.

The action comes after Instagram delayed the debut of Instagram Kids last year due to negative feedback and backlash.

Instagram Kids has been suspended as a result of a critical Wall Street Journal article that claimed Facebook knew that some adolescent girls’ use of Instagram caused anxiety and mental health problems. The image-sharing network was encouraged to abandon its launch preparations by US legislators and advocacy organisations due to safety concerns.

Children under the age of 13 were Instagram Kids’ target market. This version of Instagram was created with the intention of giving kids age-appropriate content and features that let parents monitor usage. TikTok and YouTube, competitors, have already created versions of their apps exclusively for kids.
